Iacta Alea Est: view a random reader

I love the power of random (because is it REALLY random... or not??? hmmm...) - and I recently discovered that there is a parameter you can add to a Delicious tag set to get a random webpage displayed from the list of tagged items - WOW. That is what led to the Iacta Alea Est which you can now find in the right-hand column of the blog, and also as shown below:

It's SO SIMPLE. All you need to know how to do is to create a Delicious URL including some tag(s). For example, here's a Delicious URL for stuff tagged as "tarheelreader" and "latin" and "recommended" -

http://delicious.com/tag/tarheelreader+latin+recommended

See how it works... there is delicious.com, then a search by tag, for "tarheelreader" AND "latin" AND "recommended" - and the result is a page listing all the items tagged in that way.

Well, look at this:

http://delicious.com/tag/tarheelreader+recommended+latin?random=1

All I did was add the parameter "random=1" to the end, and the resulting link has the awesome power to go get a page from that list and display it! (Click on the link and you'll see what I mean!)

SOOOOOOOO, roll the dice! I hope you will have fun with the results!

I have to admit, this may be the neatest random trick I have discovered online. I give Delicious an A+ for this one. :-)

Tar Heel Authors

There are MANY authors who have contributed to the Tar Heel Reader Latin project so far! Some of the most prolific authors are highlighted in the right-hand column here of the blog.

If you are an author and would like to introduce yourself, please use the comment area of this blog post. You can include any information you want about yourself, along with links to any of your other online projects.

... MAXIMAS GRATIAS AGIMUS OMNIBUS SCRIPTORIBUS ...

Rating the Readers

VERY IMPORTANT - Ratings at theTar Heel Reader website. Every time you use a reader at the Tar Heel Reader site, please take just a second after you are done to rate the reader! You will have a choice of 1-star, 2-stars or 3-stars. You should use the 1-star rating to flag something that has serious grammatical errors of some kind.

HELP...!!! If you notice that a reader which you have rated with just 1-star has a "Gold Shield" already, please leave a comment here at this blog about the errors you have found. It is always possible that we could miss some serious errors in the review process, so if you find errors in a reader which has been reviewed with a "Gold Shield" mark, please let us know!

Optional - Ratings here at the blog. In addition to providing ratings at the Tar Heel Reader website (very important!!!), you can also leave ratings here on the individual blog posts for each reader. At the bottom of each post, you will see a set of stars - 1-star, 2-stars, 3-stars, or 4-stars. In addition to rating the reader, you can also leave a comment. Your input and feedback is very much appreciated!

How to Create a Reader

Creating your account to write Libelli: You do not need an account to view the readers, but you need an account to write them. You can find the access code for creating your account in the password-protected LatinBestPractices group at Yahoo - or you can contact Laura Gibbs for the access code (laurakgibbs AT gmail DOT com), or contact Gary Bishop, the genius computer science profesors who is the designer of the TarHeelReader.org project (contact information). When you have the access code, you can complete the registration page.

Tagging your Libelli as Latin: Make sure you use latin as a tag when you create your reader, so that it will be listed with the Latin-language readers (the languages are listed in the right-hand column of the Tar Heel homepage). You can use other tags as well. Just make sure you use the latin tag, and that you separate multiple tags with commas.

Formatting: You can cut-and-paste the text from another file if you want, and the Tar Heel site seems to be macron-friendly. So, feel free to use macrons and/or accent marks (ecclesiastical style). I've also included vowels marked with brevia, too, in case that might be useful.

ā - ē - ī - ō - ū - Ā - Ē - Ī - Ō - Ū

á - é - í - ó - ú - Á - É - Í - Ó - Ú

ă - ĕ - ĭ - ŏ - ŭ - Ă - Ĕ - Ĭ - Ŏ - Ŭ

Writing your book:

1. Go to write-a-book - link is in right-hand column: http://tarheelreader.org/write-a-book/

2. You create pages by choosing a picture: just put in a search term in Flickr (separate multiple terms with commas), and browse results; click to choose one of the pictures.

3. A page appears below with the picture you have selected; you type in the caption. You can drag-and-drop the pages to rearrange them, or use the left- and right-arrows to move pages.

4. Repeat for all the pages you want. To delete a page, click on the red X to delete it.

5. Save your draft with the button at the bottom of the page, or publish if you are done! MAKE SURE TO TAG YOUR BOOK AS: Latin.

Adapt existing books: You can take ANY existing Tar Heel book and translate it into Latin! So, if you see any of the Tar Heel Readers that you like, just open the book, then click on SET UP in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. This will take you to a page with all kinds of information - including a link that allows you to Create a new version of this book. You can also use this same option to create multiple versions of your own book: for example, you can use the same images for vocabulary practice AND to tell a story, or you can do an English version of your Latin book, etc.

For more help, visit other pages here at this blog - or use the "Comment" box below to ask a question. Someone will get back to you soon!

How to Comment on a Reader

If you would like to add your comments about a reader here to this blog, that would be great! Please feel free to comment on readers you have WRITTEN and readers you have READ. Comments from both the authors themselves as well as from readers are all useful!

Some useful things to comment on would be:
  • specific information about how the reader was useful for you
  • ideas for using the reader in conjunction with a specific textbook or classroom activity
  • questions about the grammar and/or vocabulary of the reader
  • typos or other errors that you see in the reader which need to be corrected
  • concerns about content (readers can be flagged as "caution" if there are themes or images that are violent or otherwise not suitable for all readers)
To add a comment about a reader here at the blog, just use the Search box in the upper left-hand corner of each page to find the reader you are looking for - just entering a word from the title should do the trick. Then, click on the comment link to add a comment for the specific post for that reader.

If you are having trouble finding the right page, you can also just leave a comment in reply to this post - but if you do that, make sure you include the title of the reader you are commenting on, plus its address, so we can match up your comments to the reader.

Thanks for your input! By sharing ideas about what makes readers really useful, we can all learn to do a better job, both in creating the readers and in using them ourselves.

About the Review Process

The reviewing process being used here is very simple, based on checking for the grammatical accuracy of the Latin - nothing more. When a reader is reviewed and given the "Gold Shield" at the TarHeelReader site, that means it is something that can be used for studying Latin. Whether it is something that is actually useful for you - as a teacher or as a student - depends on many other factors, based on your own goals and needs.

Here is how the reviewing process works:

1. New readers added. As new readers are added to the TarHeel site with the "latin" tag, they are tagged with Delicious as Latin TarHeelReaders. It's very important that you use the "latin" tag when you create your reader at TarHeel - otherwise, your reader will not be picked up for review. Other Delicious tags may also be added; see the Delicious blog post for more information about that. While it is awaiting review, items are tagged as "unreviewed" readers at Delicious.

2. Reviewers try to keep up! The two reviewers - Laura Gibbs and Evan Millner - will do our best to keep up with the arrival of new readers and review them quickly. In reviewing the readers, we will be looking for grammatical errors. If we notice tiny typographical errors we will fix them. The images used are not being reviewed; only the Latin text is being checked.

3. Reviewed and recommended. If a reader is grammatically correct, here is what happens:
* the "Gold Shield" is added at the TarHeelReader website, and shows up when you browse through the Latin readers at that site
* the Delicious tag "unreviewed" is changed to "reviewed recommended" (but remember, that recommendation is just based on Latin grammar, nothing more)
* a blog post is created here for people to leave comments - we might have missed a typo or other error in the review process, so please leave a comment on the blog post if we did!

4. Reviewed and reclassified as quasilatin. Sometimes a reader does not make sense in Latin, and in these cases, it is reclassified as quasilatin. You can read this post about quasilatin readers to learn more about that.

5. Reviewed and not recommended. Very rarely, it can happen that there is a Latin reader which is grammatically correct (more or less), but which is written as a kind of inside joke, or based on purely personal interests of some kind, perhaps related to a specific class. This may also be used for readers which use the Latin words in a grammatically correct way but which are consistently not idiomatic Latin (the reviewers can make corrections to grammar, but they cannot reliably make changes in choice of idiom). These readers are tagged as "reviewed" at Delicious, but not recommended, and they do not get the "Gold Shield" at the TarHeelReader website. If you have written a reader which falls into this category and would like to have it re-reviewed, please follow the procedures for re-review as set out for the quasilatin readers.

Your feedback about these procedures would be much appreciated! As you can see, we are cobbling this together using different tools that - I hope - will make the TarHeelReaders as accessible and useful as possible. If you have any ideas about how to improve this process, please leave a comment here at the blog.

About Quasilatin

One of the reasons the review process was set up for the Latin readers at TarHeelReader was because some students have created and published readers which are not really usable by others. These readers have been labels as "quasilatin" rather than "Latin" in order to separate them out from the Latin collection.

The readers have not been unpublished, and are still available online - but in this way, other Latin students and teachers will not stumble across them and be confused by their odd language. There are a few possible reasons why a reader would be classified as "quasilatin" instead of Latin:
  • Typographical errors. Sometimes the Latin has so many typographical errors that it is not possible for the reviewer to easily correct those errors; instead, the author would need to do some more work on the reader, carefully correcting all the typographical errors (this seems to happen when someone is copying a poem or other classical text, and makes errors in the typing)
  • Grammatical errors. Sometimes people attempt to compose in Latin by copying words in their dictionary form and arranging them in sentences. For a language like Latin, this approach does not work, because the endings on all nouns, adjectives and verbs change from their dictionary form based on their grammatical role in the sentence. If a sentence does not use the correct endings, it is not possible to read and understand what the Latin means.
  • Chopped up paraphrase. Sometimes when people are paraphrasing a long text in Latin, creating a shorter paraphrase, they might leave out important words, so that the resulting phrases and sentences do not make sense. If you copy the words from an existing text, such as a poem, but do not make sure those words fit together, the result can be very confusing. When you paraphrase a text, you often need to change the endings on the words in order to make sure that the new version is grammatically correct.
Revising your quasilatin reader. You can see the items that have been reclassified as "quasiLatin" readers at the TarHeelReader website. If you are the author of one of those texts, you can work on it some more, and ask that it be reviewed again, to see if it can be put with the Latin readers. Before you do that, you should probably ask someone - such as your teacher, or some other Latin students - to look at the text and make sure it is written in good Latin. You might also use an online discussion board - such as one of the Latin Ning websites - to ask some people to check on your Latin and make sure it is good to go. Here are some Latin Ning websites where you can get help with that: eClassics, Schola (this one is all in Latin, which is fun!), and Aesopus.

When you are done revising your quasilatin reader, you can ask to have it be re-reviewed by leaving a comment here at this blog post. Make sure you include the specific title of your reader, along with its address. If you would like a personal reply to your request, make sure you include your own name and email address, too.

About Delicious

Delicious is a service that allows you to "tag" (save and classify) webpages - which includes the Tar Heel Readers, since each Tar Heel Reader is a webpage with a unique address.

You can search and sort the webpages you have tagged with your Delicious account, and you can also search and sort the webpages that other people have tagged. You do not need a Delicious account to search and sort other people's tags.

If you have not used Delicious before, I would really urge you to get an account, and give it a try. It is an easy to use tool, and you will find it has amazing powers!

Delicious and Tar Heel Readers

Because of the very limited search options at Tar Heel Readers, and the fact that only authors - not readers - can add tags to their books, we can use Delicious to give us more search flexibility.

In the right-hand column of this blog, you can see a list of Delicious tags that will help you to search and browse different categories of Tar Heel Readers in Latin:
  • Tar Heel: Reviewed: These are readers that have been checked and look ready to use - but if you notice typographical errors or other problems, let me know! Each of these readers has a page at the blog where you can leave comments.
  • Tar Heel: Macrons: Since the use of macrons is of great importance for some teachers, I'm tagging those readers which have macrons.
  • Tar Heel: Accent Marks: I'm also tagging those readers which use accent marks as an alternative to macrons to help students in reading out loud.
  • Tar Heel: Vocab List: This is for readers which - in the first slide or final slide - display a webpage address where you can get a vocabulary list for the reader.
  • Tar Heel: Latin+English: This is for bilingual readers, which alternate Latin and English pages (either Latin-English, or Latin-English-Latin).
  • Tar Heel: Poetry: I've tagging poetry - both adapted and unadapted.
  • Tar Heel: Aesop: I'm also keeping track of which readers are based on Aesop's fables.
  • You will see the authors with a large number of readers listed individually (so you can keep track of a particular author if you like their style and approach).
  • Tar Heel: Unreviewed: These are readers which have been added to the Tar Heel website, but which have not been reviewed.
  • All Tar Heel Latin: These are all the readers, both reviewed and unreviewed, at the Tar Heel website.
If you have other ideas about how to tag things, you can suggest them here. If I feel confident that I can quickly and easily use additional tags, I will do so - but if it is not quick, easy and clear to me, don't worry: even if I am not using the tags you suggest, YOU can use those tags, by creating your own Delicious account, and tagging your own items with whatever tags make the materials most useful to you and your students!
